Katie & Dean

We enjoyed our day with Katie and Dean even down to it's (very) early start! The flowers were gorgeous, from one of our favorite vendors (and of course we name drop if you ask!) and the girls were in such a great mood as we started out. The ceremony was very heartfelt and moving, we heard a few sniffles in the sanctuary! The reception was held at the gorgeous Wildflower Loft in the Central West End, one of our favorite places to lunch-- much less really nice for a celebration such as this!

Have a fabulous Thursday! Fall is making itself known here in St. Louis, the nights are brisk and the days are cool and breezy. Even the leaves are beginning to change color---- soon they will be wearing all their glorious fall foliage!

Emily & Brian

As most of our frequent blog readers know, this is the BUSY time of year for us--- and we're grateful, believe me! We haven't had a chance to show Emily and Brian's wedding off a bit, it was so much fun! They are a great couple, very grounded, very happy and have wonderful families. In over 25 years of wedding photography we've never seen a dance floor with 99.9% of the reception celebrants out on it---- it was fabulous! The song was "Shout".... and shout they did, it really set the tone for an exuberant evening. I think it is a testimony not only to Emily and Brian, their friends and family and the DJ. Regardless, we enjoyed ourselves as did everyone else!

Angels

We normally get a chance to celebrate with families and take photos that capture their joy. Yesterday we had the honor to be with a family that was experiencing deep sorrow. Baby Amanda was born to very sweet and loving parents, and sadly did not live more than a few hours. We were asked to photograph Amanda and her Mom and Dad, to capture the memory of their daughter. We ask you to join us in sending blessings to this family during their very difficult time.

Thoughts on Wedding Makeup

From the latest issue of our wedding newsletter (with some emphasis here where we have a bit more room) come these tips for wedding day makeup--- one of those things we get asked all the time. Brides want to look great on their wedding day and a few tips are always timely...........

Wedding Day Makeup

• ALWAYS have a trial run (or two) well in advance of your wedding. This is the 'no surprises' very best way to make sure that you will love the way you look. Remember, if you are not happy with the way you look on your wedding day your photos will capture every detail! If you are having a bridal portrait session you will get a chance to see how long it takes to do your makeup, how it feels, how long it lasts and most importantly how it looks in your photos. Without a formal session you can still take some snapshots to see how your look translates.
• Keep it CLEAN & SIMPLE
• Look like YOU, just more polished. If you normally don't wear a lot of makeup, your wedding day is not a great time to start! Take your daily routine and add a bit more polish--- ask a makeup professional for advise if you don't know where to start.
• Longlasting lipcolor, eyeshadow and liner are available and useful. Remember, you will be 'kissed on' a lot during your day, and you might shed a tear or two.
• Waterproof mascara is a must--- don’t forget to purchase remover! You might be surprised to learn that soap and water might not take off your mascara, check the label and pick up a bottle of remover if called for.
• Carry shine absorber sheets & lipcolor with you. They are easily available and inexpensive, your whole wedding party will be happy!
• Expensive is not always best. Oh sure, we love the cosmetics in the shiny black containers with the big white "C"....... or many other of the shishi brands. But they are not always best. If you already use the pricier brands, great, no need to stop now! If you don't, don't feel like you must. Ask friends what cosmetic lines work for them, stop by to see their representative/makeup artists and experiment a bit. If your choice is a drug store brand--- no worries. Many of these brands are produced by the 'big boys' and are great choices. The most important thing is HOW you look with your makeup style, NOT the name of the style itself.
• When you have on your ‘trial wedding face-- ask for opinions...and listen! Everyone has an opinion and they will be more than happy to give you one if you ask (and sometimes if you don't!)

Ashley & Ryan

Wedding Bells will be ringing at one of the most GORGEOUS locations in St. Louis, the Basilica in the Central West End. We're fortunate to drive by this imposing structure everyday on the way in to the studio, it is stunning. Although it seems a bit far away, you know how time flies when you are planning a wedding--- Ashley and Ryan's very special day will be here in the blink of an eye!

So, changing the subject--- now that we're past 9.11 and looking forward again, the country is abuzz with Rosie on the View and Meredith on Today. Isn't it funny that our clients all want to weigh in on what is happening on the small screen? For the record---- we love 'em both!

Formal Bridal Portraits

Think June Cleaver, Carol Brady or (possibly) Your Mom----- did they have a formal bridal portrait taken? Has formal bridal portraiture gone the way of rick-rack trimmed aprons and highballs with the evening paper? Not at all! Bridal Portraits are making a very real resurgence and many the savvy bride is choosing to include a formal session in their wedding planning. Why would they? Isn’t it a bother? In today’s faster paced world isn’t this just a poor use of both time and budget? Not at all, in many ways it is a valuable tool to insure that your day goes exactly as you planned. Ideally, a bridal portrait session should be scheduled pproximately 4-6 weeks before the wedding. As many of our brides say it forces them to stay on task and insure that they have several key components in place before the session-which then makes the last weeks prior to the wedding far smoother. A bridal session not only creates a stunning portrait of the bride but it does so when she is relaxed, calm & prepared to create a portrait of herself as The Bride. There is not a bride we talk to that doesn’t want a remembrance in all her bridal glory! The dress has had its final fitting, the bride has chosen her hairstyle and her makeup as well as her accessories, and it is an excellent time to give those a trial run before the final crunch as well as giving another layer of excitement to the wedding planning. Our brides come to the studio or location with their gown in hand, their makeup and hair is done. We’ve discussed how they want their portrait to look-what would they like the background to be? Studio? Home? A location uniquely special to the bride and groom? Are there any special props to be included? Our style on wedding day is creative and candid--- and many brides and grooms appreciate a portrait of the bride that is exactly “her”, we can all take the timein the world to create the image desired. The wedding day can then be documented as it unfolds, and the bride and her family know that her portrait has been taken ahead of time. During the portrait session the bride discovers how the dress fits, how the veil looks, how the hairstyle will work, if the makeup is what she is looking for, if the accessories are perfect, are the shoes comfortable and perhaps most importantly, just how much time did all of this perfection take anyway? We suggest you make a day of it, make it fun and special--- and ENJOY!

We urge all of our brides to consider the merits of having a formal bridal portrait taken in their choice of locations. We may not listen to June, Carol or Mom much anymore; but we do know that Martha says “It’s a Good Thing”!

Our wedding clients Fawn and Brian who are returning from a Hawaiian cruise will be in shock! It was one of the hottest days of the year when they married, and in just a couple of short weeks here we are----- can the crisp breath seeing days be far behind??

Another weekend spent capturing the extraordinarily special day of a wedding couple in St. Louis, a blessing indeed! Today we have the honor of spending the day with Emily and Brian and it will be a spectacular day. The weather promises to be just about perfect and the venue is one of St. Louis's finest--- we can't wait!

Danielle is back at school to her delight-- and sorrow! Most of the long standing studio family/clients can't believe that she is a senior in college this year. She is such an amazingly talented young woman! Her contributions to the Studio over the years have been tremendous and we all just love her to pieces. If everyone in the world worked as hard as she did there is no telling where we would all be by now!

Portraits in the Park

It is most happily again time for PORTRAITS IN THE PARK at Bobbi Brinkman Photography. Since many of you know that we are lucky enough to capture weddings nearly every weekend, we've set aside special dates for Family Portraits. We listened to our wonderful clients and continue to offer the Portraits in the Park sessions during the gorgeous St. Louis fall season. Sessions, as always, are limited and filling fast. Vrrrroooooommmmmm

Amy & Justin were married yesterday at the lovely Conservatory in St. Charles. The day had been gray and rainy, the air was thick with humidity as the bridal party made their way into the beautifully decorated garden space. Amy was positively radiant as she entered on the arm of her handsome son Chandler, and made her way to her handsome groom Justin. The ceremony was touching, and the family was photographed out in back in the gardens where there was no rain to be found. This fun couple have a special member of the family---- their beloved motorcycle, and this black beauty was featured in their stunning photographs. Talk about roaring away into the sunset..... into their future! We had a great time with them and the wedding party as well. Amy's son Chandler is quite handsome and very charming............ we think he needs to be introduced to Faith (our darling flowergirl from Katie and Aaron's wedding a few weeks ago!)

Today we are honored to photograph the wedding of Fawn and Brian and we can't wait. It will be a very special celebration of love done in their loving, generous and down to earth style.

They are getting married at a St. Louis Classic Wedding Location--- the gorgeous Jewel Box, the reception will be held at the Zoo, we know that it will be spectacular, we can't wait!

We never take it for granted when we gain a new bride and groom, and we never stop smiling when we know that we will truly gain a wonderful relationship. Sarah & Cary

On one of the hottest days in St. Louis when the humidity made everyone comment, and made even breathing rather difficult--- Sarah and Cary were married. The Piper Palm House was an absolutely beautiful background to this glowing couple! Their ceremony was a magical mix of fun and spirit, commitment and family. We had a wonderful time with this great couple and their families who were exceedingly special indeed! Even the sprinkle of rain didn't dampen anyone's spirits! By the time the reception got underway at the Lawyers Club it was obvious that this was a fantastic celebration for a wonderful couple. The heat was forgotten and the time was simply to enjoy love, thanks for the privilege of being a part of it!

Tina had just gotten home to St. Louis from a very quick trip to see her oldest daughter and her three handsome grandsons. The weather was a bit cooler on the water in Virginia, and she had a fabulous time. All that said to warn our special clients and friends that there WILL be photos to look at and stories to hear about how funny and wonderful her 'boys' are! Now if we can just find her a new car..........................

Haven't met Faith!

We had the pleasure yesterday of capturing the wedding of Katie and Aaron with "Images from the Heart..." What a lovely day, the weather cooperated and the day was bright and blue. The ceremony was held at the Provincial House Chapel at UMSL, it was breathtakingly beautiful. The chapel itself was a fabulous mixture of stone and dark wood, the lighting was fantastic pouring in through all of the stained glass. Katie was a gorgeous bride and Aaron the quintessential handsome groom. The groomsmen were handsome and the bridesmaids pretty in their very cool dresses. Black and a whisper of pink was the order of this special day. Although it has been often said that the wedding day is all about the bride----- whoever said this, they haven't met Faith! Miss Faith is Aaron's niece and she was just about the most adorable little girl we've met at a wedding! She never got tired of being in photographs and smiled with her sweet nature during the entire day and evening. She had such a charm about her--- certainly no one is able to escape her bubbly personality for long! Why, she even stood and served rolls to the reception guests in line for the buffet at Andre's!

Thanks to Katie, Aaron, and their families for allowing us to share in this very special day!

We are honored to be photographing the very special Holy Union of Dennis and Donald in 2008! This event will be perfect down to the last and tiniest detail, no doubt! We were lucky enough to see the plans that this couple has made for their day------ suffice it to say that it will be elegant, visually stunning, and spiritually rich. We send our thanks to these two men who have allowed us to be a part of their lives together.

It's official, June 2007 is fully booked here at BBP and Michelle and Kevin retained us for the very last spot. We are very pleased to be able to have the opportunity to photograph their wedding and tell their story with "Images from the Heart..."

We've had a lot of inquiries lately from brides that are looking for more creative musical expressions at their ceremonies. While we love the traditional music for a wedding ceremony, there are a lot of couples who do want something that is less traditional and more personal. If the ceremony venue allows and the bridal couple agree, then alternative music can add a spark of personality and elegance. We do have a fairly extensive list of vendors we love, among them are celloists, hammered dulcimer, guitar and vocals. Love at the Sheldon

What a gorgeous evening for a wedding at the Sheldon Concert Hall! Trisha and Jon were radiant! The wedding was lovely and one of the highlights was when this beautiful bride sung to her groom, "At Last" has never sounded better! The entire evening was magical, topped off by a smashing reception also held in the Sheldon, everyone had a fantastic time.

There was no wedding cake at all at this reception, which has become a small trend of late. Trisha and Ron had a chocolate fountain instead with all the goodies. The entire room always smells like chocolate, never a bad thing at all!

We were all blessed to have photographed such a sublime event and have been hummng Etta James all weekend!

Wedding Show

See you at the Wedding Show at the America's Center today! It's going to be the hottest day of the year in St. Louis---- which is saying a LOT considering how hot it has been so far! We might as well all be cool inside!

Happy Friday

We were able to take a bit of time away last night and do something out of the ordinary-- we were at the Samuel Cupples House on the St. Louis University campus as guests, NOT photographing a wedding or event there! The photos to the right and left are from their historical archives and are how the house looked when it was completed in 1890. Today the house looks much the same, very elegant and shining with its glorious wood and high ceilings, although completely surrounded by SLU. The occasion was a cocktail party given by St. Louis Bride magazine for advertisers, and friends and the house was full! It was really nice to be able to have a glass of wine, chat with vendors and wander through the exceptional example of the gilded age. Three floors of a beautifully restored home featuring museum quality Steuben glass on the upper floors, as well as some wonderful art. There was even great food (love those stuffed portabella mushrooms) and the dessert table was incredible!

Thanks St. Louis Bride, we enjoyed celebrating with you!

Tonight we have the privilege of capturing what will be a beautiful wedding at one of the most gorgeous venues in St. Louis!

Welcome to new family members Jodi and Derek! What can we say, it is raining brides and grooms and we are so blessed to have the very best of the best from all over the country! It is just nasty hot again here in St. Louis. At least (almost) everyone has their power restored from the storms. Stay cool, watch out for each other, keep kindness in your heart and count your blessings!

To Favor or Not To Favor??????

To Favor or Not To Favor?

Yes, that IS the question! One of the things we get asked a lot is what kind of table favors do we see at wedding receptions? The answer is to ask what kind of a wedding are you having? What is your vision? What do you have as a starting point? What is your budget? Are you crafty or will you rely on purchased items?

YMany venues have available centerpieces, use what they have and build on that. For example if a large cut glass round candle vase is available, consider using that and build around it with smaller votive holders in your wedding colors.
YBands of fabric in satin or organdy using your colors are an inexpensive and polished look for your tables. If you don’t sew, pink the edges so they don’t ravel.
YCarry your theme throughout your reception. If you are using a brown and blue color theme and the bride and groom are both musicians, then don’t be afraid to have table favors that are musical themed.
YYes, we DO see personalized matchbooks as favors but there are other ideas as well that add a lot of sparkle. Consider personalized cakeboxes, an old fashioned yet charming idea that guests take home a piece of wedding cake in a box. Unmarried guests are to place the box under their pillow and they will dream of their soon to be spouse. Personally we say take the cake home and eat it with a glass of cold milk but who are we to argue with tradition? How about cocktail napkins with your monogram? Take home votives with a special verse or your date?
YGoogle is your friend. When you see and idea you love, use Google to search that item online. You may find directions to make it, or value priced vendors who can create something for you.

YWhat works in every instance is to start with your VISION. Then comes your BUDGET..... it is not impossible to join the two. Keep a log of photos and ideas you like, if necessary replicate the look yourself using 'ingredients' you can purchase yourself. Be consistent with your theme, and start early. That way you can relax and enjoy your very special day!

YDon’t be afraid to insert your own personality, hobbies, or favorite things in your theme! The best weddings are those that incorporate unique and individual ideas.
YSeek out local vendors such as wholesale florists that may have not only floral elements, but ribbon, display items, candles both traditional and battery powered, and other great things you might not have even thought of!
YDon’t let yourself get overwhelmed! And Trust in your own creative spirit, everyone has one!

Carin and Michael were an "instant click" for us............ a fantastic couple! We're thrilled to be photographing their wedding next year and working with them from now till forever! This dynamic duo walks their talk, and are really fun to boot! Welcome to the family indeed!

Speaking of a lot of fun -- and adding what great sports--- brings us to Steven and Teresa. They were married on a fabulous getaway escape destination, and their local reception was held last night for their lucky family and friends. This wonderful bride and groom managed to triumph over no electricity, heat stroke, and lots of problems with venue and other details. It was a pleasure to see them maintain their sweet and loving dispositions when some would have morphed into the quintessential "bride or groom zilla"!

We're the luckiest studio in the world to be blessed with such incredible brides, grooms and clients in general!

What Next?

What could possibly happen next???? Two storms passing through have left many without power, some of the power restored early yesterday was gone again in the afternoon when the second storm rolled through! We were so lucky to have power at the studio as well as telephone and internet for all but a few hours mainly when we were closed at night. Driving around the city the downed trees, limbs, and debris are everywhere and many still don't have power--- it is amazing! At least the heat has broken today and St. Louis should be bright and sunny with a high in the low 80's. Last night an enormous water main broke near the south part of the city so many people already impacted by the storm had low (or no) water pressure. The road is still closed from 3 to 5 feet of water in the area and the Science Center was evacuated! (Thanks to KSDK for the photo). We cross our fingers that the worst of all this is over for our city!

It brings me to the point that brides and grooms ALWAYS need a Plan B! Our wedding today is to have photography in a park that is pretty well torn up with storm damage and the reception venue has not had power for 3 days!!!! Photography won't be an issue as we always have a plan b (c, d, and e if necessary)---- and the reception says that they will be finding a generator. We have our fingers crossed for our wedding couple.

Brides and grooms always ask the question of photographers "what happens if on my wedding day you become sick, or are in any way unable to shoot my wedding?" Make sure you ask your reception venue what happens if they lose power or the building is somehow damaged on their wedding day. Plan B is always a good idea for all phases of a wedding!

Destination HOME!

Whew! We've been away from the studio doing one of our favorite things............ a destination wedding! It is an honor to photograph any wedding, but when one of our brides asks us to go along on her adventure it is always a treat.

Last week we were in the Blue Ridge Mountains.......... talk about perfect timing!! The mountain air was cool and clean, the skies blue and the views sublime--- here at home in St. Louis it is just flat out HOT! The word "hot" really doesn't even begin to describe it. Hmmmmmmmm, let's see, air conditioners that run non-stop and bring huge electric bills, power outages, short tempers around town, mowing the lawn at 5 a.m. just because, endless watering the lawn and plants at 9 p.m. -OR- enjoying a fabulous time in the mountains, laughing, celebrating, and keeping fairly "glisten" free! (We didn't even mention barbeque and hot tubs!)

We even got a chance to visit the Biltmore Estate, now there is a house. Just when you think your house is a little dusty and could use some fresh vacuum tracks think of that gargantuan house! Somehow even the servants quarters look pretty schmancy!

It is great to be back in the studio though! We're catching up by welcoming a number of brides and grooms into the family as well as the opportunity to capture several other life milestones with "Images from the Heart..." as well. What a blessing to work your passion every day!

Jeff & Jonna

What a pleasure it was to photograph Jeff and Jonna's wedding! We had such a wonderful time and enjoyed every moment with this great bride and groom and their large group of family and friends.

Jeff and Jonna saw each other before the ceremony, we arranged it privately in the church in which they were married. They both got ready separately and then Jonna came down the aisle to Jeff---- to be an unobtrusive spectator was breathtaking, incredible and touching. Everyone who witnessed this amazing moment in the lives of this loving couple was moved to tears and expressed the sentiment that every bride and groom ought to do it this way.

Then it was off to the park to photograph what was a magical time with their bridal party. They not only all had a great time but were such good sports! What a blast!

When it came time for the wedding itself, after a bit of downtime to refresh and relax, the moment was golden. It was a lovely ceremony and all of their guests were touched by their devotion, and generosity.

The reception featured individual cakes on every table, unique as well as pretty! And a candy table was a hit with the crowd as well. Dancing and happiness was definitely the order of the evening.

Happy Fourth of July Weekend!

We've been crazy busy at the Studio........... we have much to share (and we will!) Wedding images that are spectacular, new Brides and Grooms to welcome to the wedding family at Bobbi Brinkman Photography, and more. Whew!

But this weekend we pause and celebrate a great holiday weekend with many other friends and families around the country. Relax if you can, barbeque with your family, and generally enjoy those things that renew your spirit and refresh your soul. Celebrate freedom (with a nod that freedom is never free), enjoy, and set off some fireworks!
